Surreal experiences in Maldives that one could ever dream of...

One dream I would never want to wake up from is the dream trip we had on a dream island, in the middle of Indian Ocean. Different shades of blue sea, white powdery sandy beach, honeydew sunshine all day long and soft sea breeze at night when we chill out under the starry night. As you can imagine, I’m talking about Maldives, the destination famous for the most surreal experiences one could ever dream of.

Maldives has so many dreamy and unique things to live and create unforgettable memory, but as you stay in a resort, the Maldives experience gets even better. In this month journey, I’m bringing you to the North Male Atoll for a dreamy discovery at PER AQUUM Huvafen Fushi, Maldives.

The Maldives could be the hardest place on earth to decide on which 5-star hotel to choose from. Before chosing Huvafen Fushi, I did more research than I may have ever done before. When we arrived, we found the resort more beautiful and impressive than I had imagined.

If celebrity patrons are an indicator of a hotel’s popularity, the Maldives super-lux Huvafen Fushi is about as hot as it gets. George Clooney popped in for lunch last month, Kate Moss partied in her Ocean Villa, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes booked in a massage during their honeymoon, Alexander McQueen had left when I arrived and when I left the island, Stefano Gabbana of Dolce & Gabbana and John Galliano were set to arrive (separately).

1. The Suite Life

We arrived on the island after a 30-minute ride in what is possibly the fastest wifi equipped and comfortable speed boat in the world (it seemed to be literally flying on the water!) with an unlimited supply of refreshing water and cold towels onboard. Check out our arrival on that comfy speed boat here:

There we discovered our lovely cocoon, a luxurious beachfront villa featuring a private backyard pool with an outdoor bathtub, a rainfall shower, and a plunge pool in the front of the villa with direct access to the beach facing the blue ocean.

There are three categories of water bungalows and land rooms. They share the same luxury elements - the plunge pool, the plasma tv and Bose surround sound-system, the Frette linen and L’Occitane amenities - and the same commitment to high design.

In the morning we woke up to discover the island and what the hotel has to offer. The island on which PER AQUUM Huvafen Fushi is located is gorgeous and cozy at the same time. It is walkable in less than half a day even for slow walkers.

Maldives may have many options of luxury and beautiful hotels but it is the small things and the personalized experience that make all the difference when choosing hotels. The genuine smile and helpfulness of the staff at PER AQUUM Huvafen Fushi were a great compliment to the beauty of the island and the resort. During our stay, we were made to feel that we were the only guests yet so intimate in every moment we spent on the island. That alone is a testament to the kind of treatment guests receive at PER AQUUM Huvafen Fushi.

2. The World’s first underwater spa

Yes you heard me!

In case being on a beautiful island is not enough relaxation for you, let the resort’s spa therapist take you 8 meters under the surface of the lagoon. Descend to- wards the blue light to discover iridescent pink and green parrot sh, bat sh and hundreds of wrasses and anemone sh, all magnified by the thick glass of the 180 degree windows!

Words are not enough to describe the place and the moment. The ambience is simply unreal and magical.

What an extraordinary, unusual and impressive way to restore your energy. Let yourself be pampered and relax your body and soul! Simply lie face down on the massage table where a mirror placed below allows you to continue the experience.

The massage is performed by the velvet hands of certified therapists coming mostly from Bali and Thailand. The spa treatments are designed to concentrate on well-being, beauty and rejuvenation.

Relaxing day at Lime Spa

For deeper relaxation an In- dian Yogi is also here to take morning and late afternoon Yoga sessions in a sepa- rate pavilion over the water.

The spa treatment would not be complete without visiting the relaxation room on top of the spa. The spacious room is opened on both sun- set and sunrise sides allow- ing the sea breeze in, thus bringing a true sense of freedom and blissful calm. This is the ideal place to enjoy a cup of delicious herbal tea to complete the body detox.

3. Have a wine pairing dinner at the underground wine cellar

Gastronomes around the globe are perennially on the hunt for outstanding eateries that offer an unconventional dining experience. There is a special feeling that comes with thinking you have dis- covered something unique and off the beaten path. In our case, it was Vinum - the best-kept secret dining heaven in Maldives, hidden 8 meters underground.

Vinum is home to a precious collection of 6,000 bottles of the nest wines in the world and we were welcomed by the warm smile of the Sommelier. Going downstairs, from white sand to a golden lighted hidden place, it took only a few seconds to be transported in another world and to enjoy a moment of pleasure. An extraordinary culinary experience for us to savor excellent dishes personally cooked by the Head Chef of the Resort, wine pairing with a stunning show of the wines with a very knowledgeable and friendly sommelier. 10 years from now, we will still dream about this unforgettable dinner.

4. Stingrays feeding on the sunset beach

Stingrays feeding on the sunset beach

I’ve always been a sunset chaser. But feeding the stingrays in the sunset is the one thing I could never think of. And it turned out to be one of the best sunset experiences I have ever had! Before the sun goes down, Huvafen Fushi’s delightful resident marine biologist Beth gave guests a quick briefing on stingrays and how to feed them. Beth has also made up names for each stingray that shows up at the beach along with his narratives about each stingray’s behavior. Beth then gives you a bucket of sh parts which the stingrays siphon right off your hand! I felt deeply connected with the nature, with the warm water under my feet while nurturing the stingrays. This reminded me so much that human being should be a harmonious part of nature.

5. Plunge in the infinity pool or float on flotation pool

51 shades of blue if you ask me. It’s so soothing to relax in the pool after a long day of snorkeling in the ocean. We almost always had the pool to ourselves despite the resort being on full occupancy. I’ve very little doubt that Huvafen Fushi’s infinity pool is one of Maldives’ best. I’ve seen some infinity pools just placed next to the ocean and that’s it. Huvafen Fushi’s is well thought of, with the mosaic blue tiles and shape that does look like it opens up to the sea.

And next to the infinity pool is Lonu Veyo Saltwater Flotation Pool: The only pool of its kind in the Maldives filled up with salt water that make you oat as if you were in the Dead Sea. This flotation pool allows you to effortlessly oat and soak while being surrounded by the crystal waters of the lagoon.

6. Coral reef snorkeling

PER AQUUM Huvafen Fushi is one of the best places in the Maldives for snorkeling. Regardless if you are a first timer or an expert snorkeler, PER AQUUM Huvafen Fushi has you covered with its house reef and lagoon. Prepare yourself for an awesome display by Mother Nature of some of the world’s most colorful sh, (harmless) reef sharks, and beautiful corals.

Things to do in Maldives

After snorkeling the whole afternoon under the sea, we found ourselves chilling on a luxury boat being served by a personal butler as we drifted between idyllic equatorial islands. It felt like a dream that we were living like the jet set, surrounded by the nest luxuries modern life has to offer, indulging in haute cuisine and ‘haute spa’.

Our butler explained to us that in Dhivehi language, Huvafen Fushi literally means “Dream Island”, a name in perfect match with the style and concept of the Resort. The resort is a su- per blend of Maldivian architecture and hip-chic features : thatched rooms villas on the out- side and on the inside, sophisticated design, contemporary furniture, high-tech equipment, and last but not least, warm hospitality by all the staffs which all contribute to make Huvafen Fushi a true Dream Island.
